In the article “Teachers struggle to teach the Holocaust without running afoul of new ‘divisive concepts’ rules” (WERTHEIMER September 28, 2023) I learned that teachers are getting their teaching license removed because of these new rules of refraining teaching sensitive subjects in the classroom. This new policy was passed in fear of dividing society in half and creating a judgemental space if reminding students about the controversy in that time period. Lawmakers believe that if teaching these sensitive subjects in school, history is bound to repeat itself.

My opinion on this is that by not teaching the future generation these important topics it is failing our new generation of kids why we teach these topics in history in the first place. They are taught because they left an imprint on America that changed the lives of many people. Many people lost their lives and lost their loved ones so by educating kids on why this is wrong and what effect it can have on the world, it’ll most likely steer them away from repeating it once more.

As I continue to learn about divisive concepts, I want to know more about the other side and how divisive concepts could protect us.
